A Family Affair
There is much to boast about when it comes to the instructors at Design Institute. As it turns out, we’re not the only ones showing off our staff. Kitchen and Bath instructor Cynthia Lambert had one of her many fabulous kitchen designs featured in the February 2012 issue of Better Homes and Gardens Kitchen and Bath Ideas. This national magazine is a go-to for many home owners looking for the latest in good design and is excellent exposure for any designer. Cynthia, who is known for her perfectly planned out custom kitchens, was especially excited to work on this project because it was for someone she knew very well: her sister. Not only would she be able to work with her sister to create an ideal kitchen the whole family could enjoy but they even brought in their brother as the general contractor. Not all families would be able to work this closely but that was not the case for these siblings. As Cynthia put it, “This project was special…We had a blast.”
Cynthia left no detail to chance in this design. Knowing the habits and lifestyle of her sister’s family helped inform the design decisions: pantry shelves for the weekly Costco trips and a long island that can accommodate all five children doing their homework while still giving her sister plenty of room to prepare dinner were key features. Then there were the aesthetic details, “We wanted to evoke a timeless, classic kitchen with interesting details and elements – striking a balance between continuity and variety.”
By designing from scratch, Cynthia was able to add a multitude of special elements such as the large picture window over the sink with leaded glass panels that sparkle with the afternoon sun, and the exaggerated hood with mantle above to showcase accessories. “I like the juxtaposition of refined and rustic.”
Though it took two years, it was well worth the wait. Not only does Cynthia have another incredible project to add to her accomplishments but she will actually be able to enjoy it for many years to come. Congratulations to Cynthia and her family on this stunning display of talent and hard work.
