Interaction & Experience Design – What, Why, and What’s Next 

Interaction and experience design is a rapidly evolving field at the intersection of creativity, technology, and human behavior. It encompasses the full range of ways people engage with digital and digitally enabled products, services, and environments; from mobile applications and enterprise software to AI-enabled interfaces, extended reality experiences, and the physical spaces shaped by connected technology. For students and professionals considering the field, understanding its scope, demands, and what degree-level preparation looks like is essential to making an informed decision about where and how to study.

What Interaction and Experience Design (IXD) Actually Encompasses

While UX design is often used as shorthand for this field, interaction and experience design is broader than the visual logic of an app or website. At its core, IXD is the study and practice of how humans engage with designed systems such as digital and digitally augmented physical environments, mixed-reality spaces, and the layered services that span across all. 

This broader view reflects where technology is headed. As AI-enabled tools, immersive environments, and connected systems continue to evolve, the boundaries between physical and digital experiences are becoming less distinct. The designers who will lead in this environment need a fundamentally wider frame than screen-based UX alone provides.

Modern IXD practice may include areas such as:

  • Interaction design — the behavioral architecture of digital systems: what happens when a user acts, and why that response was designed that way
  • UX research — qualitative and quantitative inquiry into how real people think, behave, and make decisions in designed environments
  • UI design — the visual and structural layer through which users access and navigate systems
  • Service design — the end-to-end design of experiences that span multiple touchpoints, channels, and moments in time
  • Human factors — the application of cognitive science, ergonomics, and behavioral psychology to design problems, particularly where safety and performance are at stake
  • XR and emerging technology design — designing experiences for augmented reality, extended reality, motion interfaces, and AI-enabled environments

Industry Demand and Why It Is Increasing

Organizations have come to understand something that was less obvious a decade ago—experience is a competitive variable. A confusing healthcare portal does not just frustrate patients, it affects outcomes. A poorly designed financial services interface does not just annoy users, it erodes trust and drives attrition. A logistics platform that field workers cannot intuitively navigate creates real operational risk.

As AI and immersive technologies become part of more products and services, the complexity of what IXD professionals are asked to develop has increased sharply. Designing AI-powered experiences requires a different kind of rigor than traditional interface design. So does designing for XR environments, where spatial cognition, accessibility, and user safety introduce challenges that flat-screen design never presented.

These shifts have important implications for prospective students deciding where to study. As the field expands to include AI-enabled systems, immersive environments, and more complex service ecosystems, effective IXD programs need to balance strong foundational design principles with exposure to current tools, technologies, and evolving areas of practice. The foundational skills of interaction and experience design are not primarily technical, though technical fluency matters. The most important capabilities IXD practitioners develop are rooted in systems thinking and human-centered design. The ability to hold a complex system in mind, to research and synthesize how real people behave in designed environments, to make and defend design decisions under constraints, and to communicate those decisions across disciplines are essential aptitudes for today’s designers.

  • Research literacy — the ability to design, conduct, and synthesize user research that produces actionable insight, not just data
  • Systems thinking — understanding how individual design decisions propagate through a larger experience, and how to design for that complexity
  • Technological fluency — working knowledge of the tools and platforms shaping current and emerging practice, including AI-powered design workflows, prototyping environments, and XR development contexts
  • Inclusive and accessible design — the ability to design for the full range of human diversity from the beginning, not as a compliance afterthought
  • Cross-disciplinary collaboration — the professional skills to work effectively with engineers, product managers, researchers, strategists, and domain experts across industries
