Bachelor of Fine Arts in Interior Design Degree, 2004
Principal Designer, Studio Jackson Inc
What was your experience like at Design Institute of San Diego?
I had a great experience at DI and felt that it truly prepared me for my career in design. I was mentored by the faculty to find my creative voice. I would be remiss not to mention Carolanne Gano, who helped me find my creative voice.
Where are you working now? What is your title?
I am Principal Designer of Studio Jackson Inc, an international published full-service design consultancy, and Ryan | Jackson Home, an award-winning contemporary furniture line represented in LA, NYC and Miami.
What could you share with a prospective student about why they should consider attending?
I felt DI (through the teaching process) exposed and prepared me to a cross section of the design industry and allowed me to find what facet of design was right for me.
If you could give one piece of advice to an aspiring interior designer, what would it be?
Follow your dream and be yourself. I had little first-hand design experience (pre DI), but let school teach me the skills to express my design point of view. Also know you will have to work very hard, but it is totally worth it.
Why did you want to become an interior designer?
The creative process to me is very rewarding. I like the idea that one can conceptualize a space, home, etc. and then bring it to fruition. That is a truly rewarding experience and career.
At what age did you realize you wanted to pursue interior design?
21. After studying art history and noticing the architecture and space were my true passion in the study, I thought, perhaps I should design space and products myself.
When you first started at DISD, did you see yourself reaching the position you are currently in?
No, I really had no idea what of type of design I wanted. I do want to thank DI for organically allowing me to find out myself.
What was your favorite class at Design Institute?
I have to say it was a tie. C. Martin's History of Interiors class and B. Byrne's Furniture design course. Both ladies shaped me as a designer.
