KELLY HINCHMAN
Bachelor of Fine Arts in Interior Design Degree, 2007
Founder / Design Principal, Studio H Design Group
What was your experience like at Design Institute of San Diego?
Design Institute prepared me for real life interior design skills. It entailed a lot of hard work, demanding load, working on projects into the late hours of the night, tons of caffeine! This is all similar to working life!
Where are you working now? What is your title?
Studio H Design Group, Founder / Design Principal
What could you share with a prospective student about why they should consider attending?
If you want the technical skills to become an interior designer, DI is the place to attend. You will graduate having skill sets that will put you above the rest and that employers are looking for.
If you could give one piece of advice to an aspiring interior designer, what would it be?
Be observant to surroundings and details, and carry a notebook - always.
Why did you want to become an interior designer?
I wanted to be in a creative industry that others can experience.
At what age did you realize you wanted to pursue interior design?
I was one of the fortunate people that from a young age knew exactly what I wanted to do. I wanted to own an interior design firm. I spent my childhood decorating my bedroom and painting the walls. I loved all of it.
When you first started at DISD, did you see yourself reaching the position you are currently in?
I'm a strong believer in the power of visualization. My plan was always to own an interior design firm. I had business cards made at 13: KHID - Kelly Hinchman Interior Design! Now I am setting out to achieve my other goals that entail having a furniture and accessory line. We are launching these soon!
What was your favorite class at Design Institute?
I loved Environmental Psychology. I use the skills learned in the class today. It's so interesting to learn how environments change our moods, and how we have control over how people will interact with each other in a space.
