DOMINIKA BANDYK
Bachelor of Fine Arts in Interior Design Degree, 2011
Manager, Architectural and Designer Services for Dunn-Edwards Corporation
What was your experience like at Design Institute of San Diego?
I had a great experience at Design Institute! I am still in contact with a lot of the teachers and staff at the school. I worked full time while attending night classes at Design Institute and was very grateful that there was flexibility with classes that made it possible for me to work. The classes were challenging and fun. I felt completely prepared to go out into the design world after graduation.
Where are you working now? What is your title?
Manager, Architectural and Designer Services for Dunn-Edwards Corporation
What could you share with a prospective student about why they should consider attending?
The staff is incredible. They become your school family.
If you could give one piece of advice to an aspiring interior designer, what would it be?
My advice would be to get a job in the field while going to school. Even if you are just working during the summer or winter break it will look great on your resume to show you have work experience. If you are having a hard time finding a job in the field while you are in school then I suggest finding a job where you work with people. Having experience working with people and design will ultimately aid in your ability to find a great job after you graduate. Real world working experience is crucial.
Why did you want to become an interior designer?
Beautiful spaces always made me happy. My environment is very important to me and I wanted to be able to make others smile and feel comfortable when they are in their homes.
At what age did you realize you wanted to pursue interior design?
I was in high school. I was very lucky and my Mom allowed me to change my room decor every few months. I was painting my room and faux finishing my furniture before I could drive.
When you first started at DISD, did you see yourself reaching the position you are currently in?
I always had high expectations for myself but my career took a different direction. I saw myself working at a residential design firm or running my own business. I didn't think I would go into the paint industry or into management. I graduated during the housing market crash and people weren't hiring designers; it was a really difficult time to start a career. So I shifted my direction and it brought me to Dunn-Edwards. I started as a Color Advisor and worked my way up. I am only 2 months into my new role managing the Architectural and Designer Service Representatives but I love being able to empower creative individuals!
What was your favorite class at Design Institute?
I don't think I can pick just one. My favorite classes where Building Codes, Photoshop and Senior Project.
