ANSWER: Portable Foot Warmer
This foot warmer, from approximately 1845, has a wooden frame with metal trimmings. The lid is decorated with a tapestry cover. A metal container is heated, either with water or charcoal, and then inserted inside the case. The warmth it produces radiates through the case and warms the feet that rest on the lid. This is a fine example of a portable footwarmer, useful for long carriage journeys, but appreciated at home too. Floors could be cold, particularly if they were made out of stone. Without central heating and double glazing large houses with high ceilings, even with a fire burning in the grate, could be quite chilly and draughty places.
